Jean Paul Getty, December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976), known widely as J. Paul Getty, was a naturalized British American petrol-industrialist, and the patriarch of the Getty family. He founded the Getty Oil Company, and in 1957 Fortune magazine named him the richest living American, while the 1966 Guinness Book of Records named him as the world's richest private citizen, worth an estimated $1.2 billion (approximately $7.2 billion in 2018). At his death, he was worth more than $6 billion (approximately $21 billion in 2018). A book published in 1996 ranked him as the 67th richest American who ever lived, based on his wealth as a percentage of the concurrent gross national product.
Berkeley California August 4, 1911 Dear Papa, Well, as I haven't heard from you yet I suppose I will have to take the initiative and write first. I hope that you had a pleasant return trip and that everthing is all right at home. I certainly wish I were back home with you and mother and had my fine, big room to sleep and study in. The weather is very cold up north and I am in great need of my overcoats so if it isn't too much trouble I would be very glad if you would send my two good overcoats up here by express as soon as convenient. I have rented a piano and am going to start right in. Would you be so kind as to send up my music also? The chopin album, Schubert album, popular songs, etc. Everything that is of value, - of course I don't need the baby music and first excercises. Don't forget the Music Dictionary as I will need it too. i am studying pretty hard and haven't much time for play. Please write soon. Love to you and mama. Address, Y.M.C.A. Paul
