Vintage Formal White Dinner Plate by Rosenthal Racine Hutschenreuther Haviland Johnson Brothers Gutherz |
This simple pattern of white china was made by a variety of potteries, as can be seen in the different backstamps. The pattern likely evolved from Rosenthal potteries, which flourished in pre-WWII Germany. The mold is identical to plates offered here, marked Johnson Brothers, Racine, Gutherz and Haviland. There are slight differences in diameter for the plates; most are 9-5/8".
Please choose from the available plates, and, as always, contact us with any questions. All are in excellent vintage condition, with very few utensil marks or wear. (Unfortunately, there were many in this estate that were crazed and had other imperfections. We won't sell those.)
Here is a bit of history about Gutherz potteries:
The O. & E.G. company started in Altrolau, Bohemia in 1884 by Oscar Gutherz and Maximilian Marx, backed by an American named Lazarus Straus, an importer in New York City (who actually owned Macy’s in 1887). Originally Oscar and Max would only decorate china but eventually started making their own porcelain pieces. Their mark was a red circle with the words “Marx & Gutherz – Carlsbad” and the word “Austria” outside the circle. Oscar’s brother Edgar bought out Marx in 1898, and the firm became O. & E.G., (Oscar & Edgar Gutherz). They changed their hallmark to a green wreath with the word ‘Royal’ in the middle and “Austria” at the bottom. (Altrolau, Bohemia is now Stara Role, Czech Republic).
****************We sell select vintage items. They are not new, and rarely look new. They are, in many cases, older than we are. They have seen life and times. We do not repair or replace parts on any of the items we sell. They came to us in the condition they are now, and are sold as is. When we say an item is in “excellent vintage condition”, we mean just that – it is in excellent condition for its age. We examine our jewelry with a lighted magnifying dental lamp. We are very particular about what we buy and sell, and describe things to the very best of our ability, in a fair and accurate way. Please - closely review the photos and descriptions of the items you wish to purchase, and if you have questions about them, we will gladly answer them prior to your buying.
The photos are part of the description. Scrutinize them.
**ARE WE WRONG? We've been selling vintage goods for a long time, but that doesn't mean we don't make mistakes. There's so much to know about this stuff. If you know that we are wrong about this item, please take the time to let us know. We're humble. We'll take it, and we'll learn. We'll also correct our listing.
Our packing materials may be unsightly, albeit brilliantly effective. We try to reuse as much material as possible from our business. We encourage you to do the same.
WE DO COMBINE SHIPPING. Let us know if you’d like us to calculate it for you! Does the shipping look off? It happens. Contact us. We'll verify it for you.
International shipping is determined by destination.
